So as a lender, I, along with other sponsors, can loan as little as $25 to say, a 45 year old mother of 3 who wants to start a bakery business in a remote village of Kenya. I pay the amount via PayPal to Kiva, who sends my loan amount along with that of other sponsors to a microfinance company in Kenya. I get frequent updates on the business and the loan amount is returned after a certain time.
